Prevalence of asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap syndrome (ACOS) in elderly patients

Resumo
Objetivos: Avaliar a prevalência da síndrome de sobreposição de asma e doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica (DPOC) (asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap syndrome, ACOS) em idosos. Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo observacional transversal, com amostra composta por 202 idosos, sendo 147 mulheres e 55 homens, que responderam a questionário baseado no módulo de asma do International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Children (ISAAC) modificado para o idoso, e foram avaliados de acordo com critérios estabelecidos pelo Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) para diagnóstico de DPOC. Resultados: Dos 202 pacientes, 11,3% apresentaram asma definitiva; 5,4% asma provável; 9,9% DPOC; e 6,4% síndrome da sobreposição de asma e DPOC. Dentre os pacientes idosos, a frequência de ACOS foi maior em pacientes na faixa etária de 60 a 69 anos (10,6%), e em mulheres quando comparadas aos homens (6,8 e 5,4%, respectivamente). Conclusão: No grupo estudado, houve uma prevalência de ACOS semelhante à relatada em estudos em outros países do mundo, reforçando a necessidade de realizar diagnóstico correto, para propiciar melhor qualidade de vida aos idosos.

Abstract
Objectives: To assess the prevalence of asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap syndrome (ACOS) in elderly patients. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was performed with 202 elderly patients (147 females and 55 males) who answered a questionnaire based on the asthma module of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) test, modified for elderly patients, and were evaluated according to criteria set forth by the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) for the diagnosis of COPD. Results: Of the 202 patients, 11.3% had definite asthma, 5.4% had probable asthma, 9.9% had COPD, and 6.4% had ACOS. Among the elderly patients assessed, the frequency of ACOS was higher in patients aged 60 to 69 years (10.6%) and in females when compared to males (6.8 vs. 5.4%, respectively). Conclusion: The present study showed a prevalence of ACOS similar to that reported in studies conducted in other countries, reinforcing the need for an accurate diagnosis, so as to improve the quality of life of the elderly
